President Trump ordered on his first day on the job that all American aid would be stopped for 90 days to ensure that projects are in line with his political goals.
Rubio clarifies now in a press release that humanitarian aid related to acute matters such as life-saving medicine, healthcare, food, temporary shelter, and maintenance will be exempt. Previously, acute food aid has also been exempt, as well as military support to several countries.
Aid organizations have expressed concern over the potentially far-reaching consequences of the stop and many are still unsure how it will affect operations.
Among others, the World Health Organization (WHO) has appealed to the USA to reconsider the decision, as the financing of HIV treatment in developing countries risks being torn apart.
