The country already has Africa's largest refugee population with 1.7 million refugees, according to the UN. It will be the third East African country to enter into a similar agreement with the US, after Rwanda and South Sudan.
US President Donald Trump has negotiated with several countries in the world to send migrants to so-called third countries, which has been heavily criticized by human rights organizations.
It is supposed to be a "temporary agreement" where it is specified that "individuals with a criminal background and unaccompanied minors will not be accepted", says an official at Uganda's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The country also wishes that "individuals from African countries should be the ones transferred to Uganda".
