Mike Johnson, Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives, is canceling all of the chamber's activities next week.

We will resume our work as soon as Chuck Schumer allows us to open the government apparatus, he says, referring to the Democrats' minority leader in the Senate, who the Republicans believe is standing in the way of an agreement.

The US government apparatus was shut down on Wednesday due to disagreement in Congress over the federal budget.

By stopping the activities in the House of Representatives, the Republicans want to speed up an agreement on the budget and stop the shutdown.

On Friday, the Republicans failed in a vote in the Senate to reach an agreement. The next vote can take place at the earliest on Monday.
