On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday this week, bomb threats of various kinds were made against at least 35 flights, the European air traffic control body Eurocontrol told Italian news agency Ansa, noting that Friday's figure should be considered preliminary.
These flights accounted for a fraction of air traffic across Europe - less than 0.05 percent, the organization said. But the threats caused concern and prompted reactions with major consequences for traffic, although nothing so far indicates they were anything other than false alarms.
Media in several countries have reported that the threats were signed in the name of a far-right movement in Russia that has carried out previous campaigns involving false bomb threats, but the movement has denied being behind them.
A cross-border investigation is underway, with European security services looking into whether the coordinated threats can be traced to Russia, the Financial Times reports, citing anonymous sources. Several countries' security services are said to consider this the most likely explanation, based on the methods used and the presumed motive.
