Alaska Senate race remains too close to call as Democrat sues over rejected ballots

The race for Alaska's one seat in the US Senate is tight - only about 600 votes are said to separate the main candidates. Now the Democratic campaign is suing the state, Reuters reports.

Despite several days having passed since the midterm elections, the vote count in Alaska is still underway. According to Reuters, only about a hundred votes separate incumbent Republican Senator Dan S. Sullivan from Democrat Mary Peltola.

Because the race is so close, attention is now turning to mail-in ballots from remote parts of the largest US state by area.

Peltola's campaign is demanding access to documents showing which ballots were rejected in Tuesday's election and why. It is now suing the Alaska Elections Commission.

The campaign says the documents are needed to monitor whether the vote count was carried out correctly. The election commission considers them non-public.
