Both Cambodia and Thailand have reached a joint agreement as follows: Firstly, an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with effect from midnight on July 28, 2025, tonight, Anwar Ibrahim announced on Monday after mediation talks in Malaysia.

This corresponds to 6 pm on Monday Swedish time.

Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet says at a joint press conference on Monday that it is time to start rebuilding trust and confidence. According to him, the parties have had a "very good meeting" which he hopes will lead to an immediate end to the fighting, reports BBC.

The solutions that Prime Minister Anwar just announced will create a prerequisite for our bilateral discussion to return to normal, he says.

"Informal meeting"

On Tuesday morning local time, Thai and Cambodian military representatives will hold an "informal meeting", says Anwar Ibrahim, who during the press conference read out a joint statement.

According to the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, American officials were present to assist in the "peace efforts". A delegation from China, a close ally of Cambodia, is also said to have participated in the meeting. Thailand and Cambodia's leaders took the opportunity during Monday's press conference to thank both the Chinese government and US President Donald Trump.

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump spoke with the countries' leaders and stated after that they both want an immediate ceasefire and peace.

Dozens dead

Fighting with heavy weapons continued early on Monday for the fifth day in a row, according to a spokesperson for Cambodia's Ministry of Defense. Thailand's military stated on Sunday evening that the situation was still very tense and that fighting was ongoing at seven locations along the border.

At least 35 people have been killed in the violence, according to authorities in both countries. Soldiers are among the dead, but the majority are said to be civilians. Over 200,000 people have simultaneously fled from the border regions.

Sporadic violent incidents have occurred over the past 15 years, but the recent days' fighting is the bloodiest in over a decade. This year, the relationship between the countries has deteriorated significantly since May, when a Cambodian soldier was shot dead at the border.
