In the city of Samraong in Cambodia – two miles from the Thai border – artillery fire was heard throughout Monday until 30 minutes before the ceasefire was to take effect at midnight local time, reports AFP's reporter.

Negotiations on a ceasefire have been held in Malaysia's administrative capital Putrajaya under the supervision of the country's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet says at a joint press conference on Monday that it is time to start rebuilding trust and confidence. According to him, the parties have had a "very good meeting" which he hopes will lead to an end to the fighting immediately, reports BBC.

The solutions that Prime Minister Anwar just announced will create a condition for our bilateral discussion to return to normal, he says.

"Informal meeting"

On Tuesday morning local time, Thai and Cambodian military representatives will hold an "informal meeting", says Anwar Ibrahim, who during the press conference read out a joint statement.

Thailand's and Cambodia's leaders also took the opportunity to thank both the Chinese government and US President Donald Trump.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says in a statement that the US welcomes the ceasefire and that he and Trump expect the governments of Cambodia and Thailand to live up to their commitments to bring an end to the conflict.

EU's Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas writes on X: "The agreement on a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand is a major breakthrough after several days of fighting. It is essential that both countries fulfill it".

Dozens dead

At least 35 people have been killed in the violence, according to authorities in both countries. Soldiers are among the dead, but the majority are said to be civilians. Over 200,000 people have simultaneously fled from the border regions.

Sporadic violent acts have occurred over the past 15 years, but the recent fighting is the bloodiest in over a decade. This year, the relationship between the countries has deteriorated significantly since May, when a Cambodian soldier was shot dead at the border.
