Using ordinary communication devices as weapons, as in the personal radio- and walkie-talkie attacks in Lebanon, is a violation of human rights.

That's what UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk said at an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday.

Türk said that the method of equipping thousands of unsuspecting Lebanese people with personal seekers, walkie-talkies, and other electronic equipment is a new criminal development in warfare.

Those who ordered and carried out these attacks must be held accountable, said Volker Türk.

Lebanon has pointed out Israel as responsible for the attacks. In total, at least 40 people were killed and around 3,000 people were injured when thousands of personal seekers in mainly Lebanon exploded on Tuesday, followed by a similar act on Wednesday when walkie-talkies exploded. The communication units were mostly carried by people with ties to the Iran-backed Shia militia Hezbollah, which is Israel's major enemy in Lebanon.
