Since the start of the war, at least 136 attacks on 27 hospitals and 12 other healthcare facilities have occurred, according to the report. The attacks raise strong concerns about the country's compliance with international law, according to the report, which examined the period from October 7, 2023, to June 30, 2024.
The hospitals in Gaza have become "death traps," says UN human rights chief Volker Türk.
Among the victims are doctors, nurses, and other civilians, while the attacks have damaged or completely destroyed civilian infrastructure.
According to the report, Israel's recurring claims that hospitals in Gaza have been used by Palestinian armed groups are "vague."
"Insufficient information has so far been made available to the public to substantiate these allegations, which have remained vague and general, and in some cases appear to be contradicted by publicly available information," the report states.
All medical personnel arbitrarily detained should be released, the UN urges in the report. Israel should also, as an occupying power, prioritize ensuring and facilitating access to adequate healthcare for the Palestinian population.
The report concludes with a call for credible investigations into the events described. They also seek an independent investigation, considering the "limitations" of Israel's justice system in investigating its own military's actions.
