The UN's highest court announced on Tuesday in written statements. The conflict mainly concerns the disputed breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabach, which both Armenia and Azerbaijan historically claim to have a right to.

The status of the breakaway region has been discussed in the court since 2021, but it is only now that the court approves the examination of the two separate complaints. Both sides accuse each other of, among other things, ethnic cleansing.

The ICJ only rules in legal cases concerning disputes between sovereign states.

Azerbaijan and Armenia in the Caucasus have long been in military conflict over, among other things, Nagorno-Karabach, which took an abrupt turn when Azerbaijani forces captured the region in a military offensive in September last year.

Talks are being held to try to reach a lasting peace between the two countries.

A sensitive issue concerns Azerbaijan's demand for a corridor over Armenian territory to the Azerbaijani exclave of Nachitjevan, which borders Turkey. In a speech to the UN General Assembly, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the issue can be resolved.
