Donald Trump's lawyers have submitted a request to overturn the verdict in the case of hush money to a porn star.
The move was not entirely unexpected. The sentence in the case, which was originally supposed to be announced on July 11, has already been postponed at the request of Trump's lawyers – following the Supreme Court's ruling in early July on immunity from prosecution for former presidents.
Now Trump wants to go one step further.
"The jury's verdict must be overturned and the charges dismissed", his lawyers write in a letter submitted to Judge Juan Merchan.
Trump was found guilty on 34 counts in May in the case of the so-called hush money. The trial concerned allegations that Trump had ordered payments to individuals, primarily porn actress Stormy Daniels, who threatened to reveal sensitive information about him during the 2016 presidential campaign – and then tried to conceal it in the accounting of his companies.
Judge Julian Merchant announced that he will make a decision on whether to overturn the verdict or not on September 6. If the verdict stands, the potential sentence will be announced on September 18.
