Something must happen, says Trump about the situation in the Middle East.
On Saturday, local time, Trump spoke on the phone with Jordan's king, and on Sunday, another call with Egypt's president is awaited.
I want him to take people. I would like Egypt to take people, says Donald Trump during a question-and-answer session on board the presidential plane Air Force One.
We're talking about, probably, one and a half million people, and we clean up the whole thing and say "it's over", he says, referring to war-torn Gaza.
Praised Jordan
According to Trump himself, he praised Jordan for successfully receiving Palestinian refugees.
I would love it if you took more, because I'm looking at the whole Gaza Strip now and it's a mess. It's a real mess, Trump tells Jordan's King Abdullah II.
The proposal has sparked, not unexpectedly, strong criticism from, among others, Hamas. Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas' political bureau, says that Hamas will oppose all forms of such solutions. The extremist group Islamic Jihad also condemns the proposal and calls it an encouragement of war crimes.
Meanwhile, the proposal is welcomed from an Israeli perspective.
Helping them find another place to start a better life is a good idea. After years of glorifying terrorism, they could establish new living conditions in other places, says the country's ultra-nationalist finance minister Bezalel Smotrich in a statement.
"Something must happen"
Moving Palestinian refugees to neighboring countries could, according to Trump, be a temporary or long-term solution. But something must happen, according to the president.
It's literally a demolition site right now. Almost everything is destroyed and people are dying. So I would rather cooperate with some of the Arab countries and build housing in other places, where they might be able to live in peace for once, says Trump.
