A total of 13 American coal-fired power plants and 42 coal mines will continue to produce energy with the help of $700 million. In addition, two brand new coal-fired power plants will be built, Trump promises.
The American coal industry is struggling against headwinds, having gone from accounting for 45 percent of all electricity production in the United States in 2010 to 15 percent two years ago. Instead, fossil gas is growing, as well as - despite Trump’s skepticism about green energy - wind and solar.
But Trump wants to actively reverse the trend, not least because the coal sector is a major employer in some states, and according to previous information from the White House, the government hopes that the newly announced support will provide 14,000 new jobs.
