Gothenburg derby halted after unrest in stands, several arrested

The Swedish football derby between Häcken and IFK Göteborg was stopped after unrest broke out in the stands.

The interruption came just under 70 minutes after police entered the section of Häcken's home stand occupied by IFK Göteborg supporters. Before that, away supporters had set off pyrotechnics twice, a few minutes apart.

“In connection with that, the police for some reason chose to enter in riot gear. Then a riot broke out. The police must explain why they entered,” match delegate Hans Larsson told TV4.

Police said on their website that several people had been arrested following “several disturbances in the stands, including extensive use of pyrotechnics”.

A preliminary investigation has been opened into suspected violations of the Act on Flammable and Explosive Goods and the ban on wearing masks.

The players left the field after the unrest, and a meeting was held about the match. The announcement eventually came that play could resume at 6:40 p.m.

Häcken lead 1–0 after an own goal in the 16th minute.

The match is in progress.

Correction: An earlier version contained incorrect information about the arena where the match is being played.
