Both the USA and Israel have long expressed suspicion that the Human Rights Council HRC and Unrwa are biased or hostile towards Israel.
Funding to Unrwa was already paused during President Joe Biden's term, after Israel accused employees in the Gaza Strip of participating in the major attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Now, President Trump has signed a decree prohibiting payments to Unrwa and stopping cooperation with HRC.
After signing, Trump reiterated, according to Israeli media, his statement that the inhabitants of Gaza should be persuaded to move to Egypt or Jordan. The news agency AFP writes that Trump believes that the Gazans would "love" to leave the Strip.
I think they would be overjoyed.
The stopped cooperation means a return to the same situation as during Trump's previous presidential term 2017-21. And as for HRC, the skepticism goes back further. The Council in Geneva was created during George Bush the Younger's presidency, but he did not want to have anything to do with it. Then the USA participated in the work under the Democratic Presidents Barack Obama's and Joe Biden's eight and four years, respectively.
