Ti West recreates seedy Hollywood

First came "X", then "Pearl" and now "Maxxxine". With this, director Ti West and actress Mia Goth conclude their bloody horror film trilogy in a seedy Hollywood.

In the first film, we met a group of young people who in 1979 were going to shoot amateur porn in a barn in the countryside, but ended up in a bloody conflict with the older couple who owned the farm. Mia Goth played two roles.

The film was shot in New Zealand and West thought it would be a shame to tear down the sets. Instead, he quickly wrote the script for "Pearl", a prequel set in 1918, where Mia Goth again had the lead role.

Bombastic finale

The idea for another film was quickly born. It became "Maxxxine", where Maxine from the first film seeks happiness as a porn actress in a Los Angeles haunted by a serial killer.

It was the third film Mia and I did together in a very short time, and we have an almost wordless way of communicating now. We wanted to end the trilogy with a bombastic finale, and we did, says Ti West.

He got the opportunity to film at Universal Studios and in a chase, Maxine is pursued past the sets of Norman Bates' motel from "Psycho" and all the way into the iconic "Psycho" house, which still stands on its hill.

It felt very strange. Using that house in a new film shouldn't work, but here it actually did, says West.

Time capsule

The filming also gave West the opportunity to recreate parts of Hollywood Boulevard as it looked in 1979 with porn shows, pimps, and generally seedy environments.

I tried to make these environments into a real main character, part of the story. Hollywood Boulevard as it looked then was a time capsule. It was so exciting to be able to recreate it. My inspiration? Maybe not any direct titles, but everything from Italian giallo to American film noir, says he.

What comes next, he doesn't know. There are many ideas, but it's impossible to say which one will stick.

Maybe a film with Mia, but it has to be a project that develops organically. It has to be something very different that lets us leave the main characters from these three films, says Ti West.
