The men, two of whom are brothers, were arrested during a high-profile police operation against several locations in Tyresö in March 2024. It involved, among other things, a local facility described as a mosque.
Nacka District Court is now sentencing the men to prison.
They are convicted of participating in a terrorist organization, a serious crime, says the court's presiding judge Olof Roos at a press conference.
It concerns IS in Somalia and participation has taken place, among other things, through recruitment to the organization.
No Concrete Plan
The law prohibiting participation in terrorist organizations came into force in 2023. On Friday, the first verdict was handed down, against a 22-year-old man who was sentenced to prison for various crimes related to IS in Somalia.
Now, four more men are being sentenced for, among other things, that crime. The sentences will be imprisonment for three years and up to six and a half years.
Three of the four were also charged with preparing for terrorist crimes, but were acquitted on that point.
We lacked a concrete plan for the major terrorist crime that they were supposed to have prepared for. The small plan we did see did not match the preparation crime that the charge concerned, says Olof Roos to TT.
Time and place were missing, among other things.
Prosecutor: Very Pleased
Prosecutor Lars Hedvall at the National Security Unit says he is "overall very pleased with the verdict".
I can state that the excellent investigative work by the Security Police, which has led to the material we have been able to present, has led to the court largely sharing my views. I can state that the court has chosen not to convict for preparation crimes, where I will have to look at the court's argumentation to see if there is reason to appeal, says Hedvall.
The prosecutor has not yet decided whether to appeal the verdict.
Since I haven't gone through and taken a stand on the verdict, I can't really say what I would want to appeal or not. But it's clear that when I look very quickly at the parts that concern participation crimes and also the serious weapons crimes, I can't immediately see any reason to appeal there, says Hedvall.
Three of the men are also convicted of serious weapons crimes, which has affected the length of their prison sentences. The four men have denied the crimes.
Three of the four men were charged with preparing for terrorist crimes.
According to the charge, they had possessed a pistol with the intention of killing or harming other people in the name of the Islamic State.
The trio was acquitted of preparation crimes, but was convicted of serious weapons crimes due to the possession of weapons.
All four are also convicted of participating in a terrorist organization, by acting on behalf of IS in Somalia. It involves having contact with IS members in Somalia and engaging in recruitment, weapons training, and counseling.
All four have denied the crimes.
