Thousands of Fatalities in Haiti's Gang Violence

Over 5,600 inhabitants in Haiti were killed in gang-related violence last year. This is shown by UN statistics that exceed previous estimates of the number of violence victims in one of the world's poorest and most vulnerable countries.

The number of fatalities is an increase of over 1,000 victims for 2023. Moreover, many thousands more have been injured, kidnapped or otherwise exposed to the gangs' violence, reports the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Criminal gangs control almost the entire capital city of Port-au-Prince, important transportation routes, and significant social functions.

"The individual statistics cannot capture the absolute terror that afflicts Haiti, but they show the exhausting violence that the inhabitants are subjected to," states UN human rights chief Volker Türk in a statement.

Large parts of the country are also lawless, despite efforts including peacekeeping forces from mainly Kenya – supported by the UN and the USA – that have been deployed in Haiti.
