Thousands of people are to be permanently evacuated from the volcanic area on the island of Flores in Indonesia. The volcano has had several eruptions in the past few days and nine people have died, with hundreds of homes buried in ash.
The authorities have raised the warnings to the highest level and also urged both the local population and tourists to avoid a seven-kilometer zone around the volcano.
Over 2,600 families live in the area and the island is also a popular tourist destination.
"The mountain cannot be moved. It is we who must move", said Suharyanto, the head of the disaster management agency, to people seeking shelter from the eruptions.
