The global coal consumption is expected to reach a new record in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Despite goals to reduce the use of fossil fuels, the demand for coal appears to be increasing to a new top level for the third year in a row.
The consumption of coal is expected to reach 8.8 billion tons, according to the report from IEA.
The energy organization also expects the demand to continue to increase until 2027. However, it also depends on how China, one of the world's largest producers of coal, acts going forward. There, the use of coal has increased, not least due to increased demand for electricity. IEA expects the consumption of coal to reach a new record level in 2024.
The report also shows that the decreased demand for coal in parts of the world has slowed down. In the EU, the demand for the fossil fuel decreased by 23 percent in 2023. This year, the decrease is expected to be 12 percent. And in the USA, a decrease of 5 percent is expected, which can be compared to 17 percent last year.
