The American video artist Bill Viola has passed away, writes The New York Times.
He is regarded as a pioneer in video art and described his works as visual stories. Viola studied Zen Buddhism in Japan in the early 1980s and was also influenced by Sufism and Christian mysticism.
In his artistic development, he drew inspiration from, among others, Renaissance painters, and his works revolve around the cycle of life and central human themes, such as birth, love, and death.
