The Taliban's highest leader in Afghanistan has issued a ban on installing windows that face areas where women are present. Windows in already existing residential buildings should be blocked, according to the decree.

Windows must not be placed so that it is possible to see "the yard, the kitchen, the neighbor's well, and other places that are usually used by women", states a statement from the Taliban regime.

"Seeing women working in the kitchen, in the yard, or fetching water from the well can lead to indecent acts", writes spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid on X.

Local authorities will monitor construction sites to ensure that the rules are followed.

Since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in 2021, women have almost been completely erased from public life. The UN has condemned what it calls the Taliban regime's "gender apartheid".
