Migration obstacles in watercourses pose the greatest threat to the eel's recovery, followed by illegal and legal fishing, according to a new international investigation into Sweden's eel management.
The European eel is acutely threatened and the state research council Formas has, on the government's commission, investigated which measures can be most effective in helping the recovery.
The recommendations that now apply primarily concern improved migration opportunities for the eel past hydroelectric power plants and other barriers in watercourses, reports Naturmorgon i P1.
They also recommend that Sweden continue to phase out eel fishing and that the release of imported eel larvae in Swedish waters be discontinued.
