The Government will proceed with the proposal to revoke citizenship for gang criminals – despite disagreement in the Parliament, something that TV4 News was the first to report.

"It is true that we are now setting out the plan to move forward as soon as possible. To save time, we intend to investigate the issues of constitutional amendment and the content of ordinary law in parallel", says Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer in a written comment to TT.

A broad parliamentary majority is in favor of being able to revoke citizenship for someone with dual citizenship, if they have provided false information, bribed or threatened their way to citizenship or have committed crimes that seriously threaten national security.

However, the governing parties want to go further and also be able to revoke citizenship for gang criminals, something the Social Democrats and the rest of the opposition have said no to due to the formulations being too unclear.

"Now we are producing a concrete basis that the parties in parliament can take a stand on. To take back control from the gangs, we must move forward on several fronts simultaneously and do things that Sweden has not done before", writes Strömmer.
