After the referral bodies said no, the government is now dropping the proposal for a new time-limited digital support to magazines that offer in-depth social and news journalism.
Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand (M) commissioned Madeleine Sjöstedt in 2023 to develop proposals for such support, but the referral bodies were critical. Instead, they are calling for permanent support for more types of magazines.
"We therefore make the assessment that we should not proceed with the inquiry's proposal. The government is, however, continuing to work to strengthen democracy by ensuring the public has access to independent and reliable journalism," says Liljestrand in a press release.
She emphasizes that the government "takes the magazines' situation seriously".
