The Ghost Man got his name when, masked with a piece of fabric with cut-out holes for his eyes, he committed a series of rapes and assaults in Tensta, Stockholm, in the 1980s.
The man, now in his 55-year-old, was released from his latest prison sentence as recently as last June. Last autumn, he was arrested again, suspected of having raped a woman in Mölndal municipality south of Gothenburg.
The rape occurred in a storage room at the end of October.
The man and the woman had had a brief contact earlier, after which he began sending her a large number of messages.
According to the indictment, he wrote, among other things, "You won't get away" and "They'll catch you".
"Vulnerable situation"
In the end, the woman agreed to meet him, but was then threatened with a knife, and the man raped her.
The woman has been in a very vulnerable situation, said prosecutor Mikael Sjöholm in connection with the indictment.
The Gothenburg District Court has now convicted the man of rape and unlawful threats. He is sentenced to four and a half years in prison, while his previous conditional release is revoked.
It's about 609 days that he will have to serve in addition to the prison sentence. Then, he can be conditionally released again, but they will be added, says Chief Judge Anne Rapp.
We have taken into account that the woman was in a vulnerable situation and that it's a repeat offense.
Convicted in 1988
The man was sentenced to four years in prison as early as 1988, but has since been convicted multiple times for new rapes and sex crimes.
Over the past 15 years, he has received several fines for driving without a license and one case of purchasing sexual services in 2015.
In 2017, he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for two rapes in Varberg, including robbery on both occasions.
He was conditionally released in January 2020. Six months later, he raped a woman in the Gothenburg area and was sentenced to another four years in prison.
He was conditionally released again in June 2024 – but was arrested a few months later and is now sentenced to a new prison sentence.
He must also pay damages to the woman totaling 223,000 kronor.
