President Yoon Suk-Yeol, who belongs to the conservative party The People's Party (PPP), introduced a state of emergency on Tuesday evening local time to protect the country from "communist forces".
The President motivated the decision by stating that the opposition is paralyzing the government's work.
The state of emergency implies that all political activities, including those in parliament, are prohibited. So are demonstrations and public gatherings, while the media is placed under state control.
During the night, the parliament, with the Democratic Party (DP) in majority, voted to repeal the war laws, and the state of emergency was declared invalid.
President Yoon Suk-Yeol later announced in a televised speech that he would lift the state of emergency, which lasted a total of around six hours.
The opposition now wants to bring the President to trial and the country's largest trade union has called for a general strike until he resigns.
The government party's leadership, the Prime Minister, and President Yoon Suk-Yeol's staff have been called to a crisis meeting on Wednesday.
