The monthly statistics from the industry organization EAMA show a clear language: around Europe, Tesla's sales are now decreasing, while several competitors in the electric car market are instead experiencing a sales boost.
Both the financial newspaper Financial Times and the news agency Bloomberg note that the sales decline is occurring at the same time as CEO and founder Elon Musk is increasingly actively involved in European politics and, among other things, has expressed his support for the Alternative for Germany (AFD) party ahead of last weekend's German election.
Musk has, among other things, arranged and participated in a long conversation with party leader Alice Weidel, which was broadcast on Musk-owned X. He also appeared at the end of January at an election meeting with AFD.
In the important German market, Tesla now sold only 1,277 cars, the lowest figure since the summer of 2021. In France, sales simultaneously plummeted by 63 percent to the lowest figure since August 2022.
Tesla was also beaten by Chinese BYD for the first time on the British market. This is happening at the same time as the total electric car sales in Europe amounted to 166,000 vehicles, which is an increase of 37 percent compared to January 2024.
From Tesla's side, it has been warned that design changes in the manufacturer's Y-model, which was originally launched in 2020, will contribute to reduced production in the beginning of 2025.
Tesla's stock plummeted on the New York Stock Exchange and closed at minus 8.4 percent on Tuesday.
