Not one of the world's seven wonders – but still one of the world's most important geological sites. The large quarry on Kinnekulle in Västergötland has been selected as one of 100 geological heritage sites that have great significance for understanding the Earth's history and the development of geological science. This is reported by P4 Skaraborg.
It is the International Union of Geological Science, one of the world's largest scientific organizations, that is behind the designation.
Nya Lidköpings-Tidningen writes that Lund researchers Per Ahlberg and Anders Lindskog are behind the nomination work that led to the International Union of Geological Science selecting the quarry.
The quarry, located in the Platåbergens geopark, was designated as Sweden's first global geopark by Unesco in 2022.
