It looks cute but can cause damage for billions. After the work to eradicate the invasive mink has been down, there is now hope that it can be eradicated from Sweden.

It readily enters cars and houses and gnaws and causes major damage, among other things it gnaws through cables and destroys interior. In addition, the small fur-covered animal poses a threat to, among other things, domestic birds.

After the funding for the project to eradicate the stone marten was withdrawn, the government decided this year that the initiative would continue. Now the work is in full swing in southern Sweden, reports Sveriges Radio.

If we do not eradicate the species, it is beyond all reasonable doubt that it will cause costs in the billions in private, municipal and state infrastructure, says Per-Arne Åhlén, project manager for Invasive Species at the Hunters' Association, and responsible for the hunt for stone martens, to the radio.

The stone marten occurs naturally further south in Europe and there is evidence that it has been in Sweden at least since 2018.
