Since 2020, a more permissive attitude towards alcohol and intoxication can be seen, for example, at parties, with children, or when eating at a restaurant.
“It is alarming that the view on intoxication drinking in Sweden has become more permissive since 2020 and that the trend continues in this year's measurement. Research clearly shows that the more you drink, the greater and more frequent the alcohol-related injuries become,” says Karolina Dahlbeck Nobel, responsible for public health at Systembolaget in a press release.
A clear majority, 83 percent of Swedes, think it is wrong to get intoxicated when children are present. However, the proportion answering that it is "completely wrong" is 47 percent this year, which can be compared to 61 percent when the measurements started in 2010.
It is primarily older people over 65 years old who have a more restrictive attitude towards intoxication drinking. Women also have a more restrictive attitude to some extent. A more permissive attitude is seen primarily among young people and even more clearly among younger men.
The annual alcohol index decreases this year by 0.3 to 59.2 on a scale of 0-100. In 2020, the figure was 63.4. A lower figure indicates a more permissive attitude towards intoxication drinking.
In the latest survey, 5,586 people aged 17-84 were interviewed via web interviews in Novus' randomly recruited Sweden panel.
The survey was conducted mainly between May 16-30 this year.
The alcohol index has been conducted since 2010 and is a comprehensive measure of Swedes' attitudes towards alcohol, with an emphasis on intoxication drinking in different situations.
