So far this year, over 800 people have ended up at the Enforcement Authority with debts for takeaway food, which is twice as many as during the entire previous year. The number has doubled every year since 2022.
Many are assumed not to have been able to afford to eat their fill in any other way than through invoice or installment payment. Even though it involves relatively few cases, it testifies to the state of the Swedish economy, believes Davor Vuleta, private economist spokesperson at the Enforcement Authority.
We know that people prioritize food and if it goes so far that one cannot afford to pay for food, then one finds oneself in a very vulnerable economic situation, says Vuleta to Ekot.
