According to Andersson, the US's position as Sweden's most important security policy partner is now being challenged.
The latest update of Sweden's security policy analysis was made in April 2024. It analyzes threats and risks to Sweden's security. It also serves as the basis for the Riksdag's defense decision on upgrading 2025-2030.
After the US's various statements last week and the announcement that the US and Russia will initiate peace talks on Ukraine, Andersson believes the analysis is outdated.
"Very different picture"
It states, among other things, that "the US is, through its engagement and military presence, a cornerstone of European security."
Andersson now wants the government to take the initiative for a rapid update.
The S leader points primarily to the speech held by the US Vice President J D Vance at the security conference in Munich on Friday. There, he identified migration as the major threat to Europe, not Russia.
This shows that the US and we have a very different picture of the security policy situation. It is clear that it challenges the transatlantic cooperation, says the S leader.
"Can be a problem"
In the latest security policy analysis from 2024, it was noted that the US was then facing a presidential election, and it was emphasized that the foreign and security policy direction and the transatlantic engagement that the US chooses in the coming years will have "very great significance" for Swedish and European security.
We should work to have a good transatlantic link. It is in the US's and Europe's interest, says the S leader.
But at the same time as we work for that, we must also prepare ourselves for the fact that it can be a problem in the cooperation.
Magdalena Andersson emphasizes that Europe needs to take greater responsibility for its own security.
