The work of identifying the dead is ongoing, so the police are not yet providing any information on the age of the victims or the exact number of fatalities.
Why we can't specify the number of dead more precisely at present is because the outcome of the injuries is so severe, says Roberto Eid Forest, head of the local police area Örebro, at a press conference on Tuesday evening.
The suspect – a man in his 35s according to earlier media reports – is one of the dead, confirms Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer.
The person whom the police currently believe is the primary perpetrator is among the deceased, he says.
There are currently no suspicions that it is a terrorist crime, and the police believe that the man acted alone, although they are not ruling out the possibility of others being involved in the incident, says Roberto Eid Forest.
At present, we feel confident that no further attacks will occur. Several investigative measures are being taken, including a mapping of this individual.
Motive unclear
However, no motive has yet been clarified.
We all want to understand why, of course. What happened and what the perpetrator's motive might have been. The picture will become clearer in time, says Gunnar Strömmer.
The alarm about the shooting at Campus Risbergska was raised at 12:30 pm on Tuesday. The school is the center for municipal adult education in Örebro.
The police cordoned off students at several schools in the area and a nearby restaurant. The public was advised to stay away from the area. All students had left the schools by evening.
The police are working on the shooting as a special incident, and are receiving support from other police regions.
Patrik Ungsäter, regional police chief, said at an earlier press conference that they quickly received support from the rapid response unit from Stockholm. He cannot comment on how many shots were fired or with what weapon.
In emergency mode
Region Örebro has gone into emergency mode and has established a special healthcare management.
We have received injured patients, but I cannot confirm how many and I cannot say anything about their condition, says Karin Stenström, communications chief at Region Örebro's healthcare and medical administration.
The municipality of Örebro has also set up a crisis organization after the incident at Campus Risbergska.
We are naturally activating our support groups, which provide an opportunity for people who need psycho-social care and support to come forward, says municipal director Peter Larsson.
