Hand Grenade in Old Town – Defused by Police

It was a live hand grenade that was found on Skeppsbron in Old Town in central Stockholm, according to the police. It was lying on a bicycle path. We are working with a comprehensive effort, says Ola Österling, press spokesperson at the police in Stockholm.

It was early in the morning, around 7 am, when a passerby discovered the hand grenade on the bike path near a pedestrian crossing, says Ola Österling.

Then we began evacuating the area and people were accommodated in several local shops and bakeries along the way, he says.

The police cordoned off part of Old Town and the National Bomb Squad performed a controlled explosion. The police advised people in the vicinity to cover their ears, according to TT's reporter on the scene.

Our bomb technicians destroyed the hand grenade on site, they use a form of explosive charge to destroy it, says Ola Österling.

"Unpleasant"

Marita Brorsson, on a temporary visit to Old Town, had her morning walk interrupted and could not return to her accommodation.

It's a bit unpleasant, she says.

At Café Nova by Järntorget, morning deliveries were cancelled. Customers were worried, says Tuss Högström.

It was a live hand grenade. People aren't coming to work, they're sitting here and working instead.

Near the Castle

The hand grenade was found midway between the Royal Palace and Slussen, slightly closer to the palace.

Skeppsbron was closed from Guldbron to the Royal Palace. The police also cordoned off an area in the water, from the quay along Skeppsbron.

The police have conducted a crime scene investigation and received assistance from special search dogs. The incident is being investigated as an attempted gross public destruction, but no one has been arrested.

Our investigators are working at full capacity, but what we've found out I can't say, says Ola Österling.
