It was a strong upward trend on the Hong Kong stock exchange after the weekend closure, just a few hours into Wednesday's trading. The Hang Seng index had risen by 5.7 percent.
The stock exchanges in China have been closed for the rest of the week.
In Japan, the development of trading went in the opposite direction, the Nikkei 225 index was down 1.6 percent and the broader Topix down 0.8 percent.
In South Korea, the Kospi index was down 0.3 percent.
