The total costs for natural disasters increased during the first half of 2025, to an estimated 135 billion dollars, equivalent to approximately 1,300 billion kronor. This is shown by figures from the Swiss reinsurance company Swiss Re. It can be compared to last year's figure of 62 billion dollars for the same period.
The statistics are drawn up, among other things, by the fires in Los Angeles in January. The insurance costs are estimated to amount to around 40 billion dollars and it is thus, in terms of insurance costs, the most expensive fire ever.
The earthquake in Myanmar, which also affected Thailand, India, and China, also draws up the insurance costs for 2025.
