Unions and employers have reached a preliminary agreement for employees at the ports along the US east and south coasts, the two parties write in a statement.
The conflict concerned the port owners' plans to install automated systems.
The deadline was set for mid-January and a failed agreement would have had a significant impact on the American economy since the ports in question account for approximately half of all container imports to the US.
