Yaël Braun-Pivet from President Emmanuel Macron's party Together has been re-elected as Speaker of the French National Assembly.
The question was more charged than usual due to the difficult political deadlock the country has been in since the election on July 7. It took three ballots for enough members to unite behind Braun-Pivet, who has been serving as Speaker since 2022.
The new parliament, which convened for the first time on Thursday, is split into three larger blocks: the Left Alliance NFP, President Emmanuel Macron's center party, and the far-right party RN.
The Left Alliance is the largest political force in the new parliament. However, the diverse coalition – which, in addition to the smaller Communist Party, consists of the Left Party LFI, the Social Democratic PS, and the Green Party EELV – has not yet been able to agree on a candidate for the post of Prime Minister.
The outgoing Prime Minister Gabriel Attal is expected to remain in office at least until after the upcoming Paris Olympics to allow more time for government negotiations.
