A court in South Korea's capital Seoul decided on Sunday, local time, that President Yoon Suk-Yeol, who has been impeached, should not be released from detention, writes news agency Yonhap.
The judge motivates the decision to extend the detention with the risk that Yoon Suk-Yeol will destroy evidence if he is released.
Afterwards, supporters of Yoon broke into the courthouse and smashed windows, show TV images.
When Yoon Suk-Yeol was arrested on Wednesday, he referred to his right to remain silent. But according to Yoon's lawyers, he spoke for about 40 minutes before the judge during the nearly five-hour-long hearing behind closed doors.
Yoon's lawyers demand that he be released, as they believe that the arrest of the former president was based on an invalid arrest warrant.
The 64-year-old former prosecutor Yoon is being investigated, along with several other political and government top officials, for attempting to carry out a coup.
