Yoon, who is facing an impeachment trial, has in recent days refused to leave his residence, despite persistent requests from, among others, investigators at the anti-corruption agency CIO. He is surrounded by hundreds of loyal security guards and has also received support from thousands of supporters who have protested against attempts to arrest him.

Conservative Yoon Suk-Yeol triggered political chaos when he suddenly announced on December 3 that he was declaring a state of emergency with accompanying martial law, citing the opposition's obstruction of the government's work. He was stripped of presidential powers on December 14, after parliament voted to put him on trial.
