South Africa's ruling party ANC has finally expelled its former party leader, the controversial ex-president Jacob Zuma, since he led a rival party in the latest election campaign.
ANC, which lost its absolute majority in parliament in May partly due to voter leakage to Zuma's new party, announces that his actions are incompatible with the party's statutes.
Jacob Zuma has actively opposed ANC's integrity and campaigned to drive ANC out of power while claiming that he has not forfeited his membership, says the party's general secretary Fikile Mbalula at a press conference on Monday.
ANC announced already in January that it had suspended its scandal-ridden ex-leader since Zuma backed the newly formed MK. The party finished third in the election on May 29 with 14.5 percent of the votes. ANC received 40 percent, the party's weakest result since it came to power three decades ago after the fall of the apartheid regime.
