The past few weeks have seen growing concern that a major war could break out in the region after Hamas' political leader Ismail Haniya was killed in an attack in Iran's capital Tehran. Moreover, a leader of the Iran-backed Shia militia Hizbollah was killed in Lebanon's capital the day before.
According to Israeli intelligence information obtained by Axios, a retaliatory attack is only days away and much suggests it will happen by Thursday at the latest. The sources tell the news site that an attack may come before talks on a ceasefire in Gaza, which are planned for Thursday.
At the same time, reports in Lebanese media linked to Hizbollah suggest that the group is evacuating from its base in Beirut.
On Monday evening, John Kirby, spokesperson for the US National Security Council, said that one must be prepared for Iran to launch a "significant" attack on Israel this week.
Earlier, there has been speculation about whether the retaliatory action from Iran and its allies would be carried out during the Jewish holiday of Tisha B'Av, which falls on Monday and Tuesday. Other sources have instead claimed that the response may instead be directed at individual individuals.
Leaders around the world are frantically trying to calm down the situation in the Middle East.
