Snow and ice have covered almost the entire Kansas, western Nebraska, and parts of Indiana, and in the latter state, the national guard has been called in to help motorists who have gotten stuck in snowdrifts or driven off the roads.
It's snowing so much that the roads are completely clogged again half an hour after the snowplows have been by, says Todd Ringle at the police in Indiana.
Several states – including Kansas, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Virginia – have declared a state of emergency, and as far south as Mississippi and Florida, warnings have been issued for cold and treacherous weather.
The weather agency National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for winter storms in the central USA on Sunday, a warning that from Monday will stretch in a belt all the way to New Jersey on the Atlantic coast.
"The areas in the region that receive the heaviest precipitation can experience their largest snowfalls in at least a decade", writes NWS.
It may become "very difficult to impossible" to get through on many roads, warns the agency.
But it's not just for cars that problems arise. Air travel has major disruptions, and by Sunday afternoon, over 1,300 departures had been cancelled, and more were expected according to NBC.
In several states, schools will be closed on Monday. And the problems don't seem to be letting up, from Monday, two-thirds of the American mainland will experience "dangerous" cold, with temperatures around ten degrees lower than normal.
Cold winds from Canada are also believed to be able to cause even worse cold for northeastern USA later in the week.
