Prosecutor Elisabeth Andersson decided on Monday that the preliminary investigation leadership will return to the police, since the suspect Rickard Andersson is deceased.
I just made the decision, she says to Expressen.
"But since they are still investigating whether the man acted alone, I have asked the police to keep me continuously informed about the status of the investigation", she says further in a press release from the Prosecution Authority.
Took his life
Ten people were killed and six injured when Andersson opened fire at Campus Risbergska in Örebro on February 4. He was later found dead at the school by the police, after having taken his own life.
All the deceased in the shooting, seven women and three men, were from Örebro County.
The majority of the murdered were foreign-born, and it has been confirmed that there is a Bosnian citizen and several Syrian citizens among the deceased, according to the respective countries' embassies.
A major focus is now on clarifying the motive behind the massacre. Since several of the murdered were foreign-born, there has been speculation about whether the perpetrator may have had a racist motive. Niclas Hallgren, deputy regional police chief in Bergslagen, said on SVT's Agenda on Sunday that one cannot rule it out at present.
It has been included since we found out who the victims were. So we have had ethnicity in our investigation. What we have said is that we have not found any other parts that point to any ideological motive, but we are keeping the question open.
Backing away from formulation
The day after the massacre, the police wrote on their website that "everything suggests that the perpetrator acted alone without ideological motive". According to Hallgren, the formulation was "too limiting".
What we said from the beginning is probably more accurate, we found no factors that pointed to that then. It was an extremely strained situation from the start and the way forward. So we simply wanted to meet the citizens' and media's need for information, and maybe it went a bit too fast.
The deceased in the shooting were of the following ages: One woman 32 years, woman 38 years, woman 46 years, woman 52 years, woman 54 years, woman 55 years, woman 68 years, man 28 years, man 31 years, man 48 years, and the shooter himself.
