Italian authorities confirm that additional security measures around the sailboat Bayesian will be put in place before it can be salvaged, reports The Guardian.
Italian prosecutors are worried that jewelry and other valuable items on board the wreck – including intelligence data – may fall into the wrong hands, reports CNN citing anonymous sources.
Two "super-encrypted" hard drives, placed in the boat's watertight safe, are said to be the source of the concern. Survivors have stated that Lynch "did not trust cloud services" and carried the material with him.
The authorities have confirmed to the media that the hard drives may be of interest to foreign governments, such as China and Russia.
The luxury sailboat is believed to have been caught off guard by sudden storm winds that surprised the crew and passengers. Seven people died when Bayesian sank to the bottom of the sea off Sicily on August 19 within a quarter of an hour.
15 people were rescued, including Mike Lynch's wife.
