"The dissolution of Alex Jones' assets and Infowars' death is the justice we have long waited for and fought for," says Robbie Parker, whose daughter Emilie was killed in the shooting in Newton, Connecticut, in a statement from his lawyers.
Jones and his company were sentenced in the fall of 2022 to pay a total of 1.4 billion dollars in fines for spreading lies about the massacre at the school. He spread false claims about the Sandy Hook massacre via Infowars and popular podcasts for several years. Among other things, he claimed that the grieving families were hired actors with the aim of restricting gun rights in the USA.
Jones wants to stop the purchase
The sale price of Infowars is still unknown. The auction opened on Wednesday.
Jones confirmed the sale on social media on Thursday and announced that he intends to take legal action to try to stop it.
Then came the news that a federal bankruptcy judge ordered an inquiry into how the auction was conducted. This followed Jones and his lawyers claiming that the bidding process was changed with short notice from an open round to only sealed bids being accepted.
Jones has previously said that if opponents buy Infowars, he will move his daily broadcasts to a new platform.
It is also unknown what The Onion plans to do with the platform.
The school shooting sparked a debate
It was in December 2012 that a 20-year-old man broke into the Sandy Hook elementary school and shot dead 20 small children and six adults. The perpetrator then murdered his mother before committing suicide.
The school shooting is one of the deadliest in US history and sparked an intense societal debate about gun control, psychiatric care, and entertainment violence.
