Romania is holding a new presidential election in May, after the election result from the election in December has been invalidated due to allegations of Russian influence.

A political crisis has hit Romania since the Supreme Court ruled that the presidential election must be re-held.

The decision came after President Klaus Iohannis made public previously classified material, which alleges that Russia drove a campaign to promote the Russia-friendly candidate Calin Georgescu, who received the most votes in the first round.

The previously relatively unknown Georgescu became known overnight on Tiktok, which raised suspicions of electoral interference. He has called the annulment of the election result a "formalized coup d'état".

The first round of voting will now take place on May 4, and a second on May 18 if no one receives more than 50 percent of the votes in the first.
