Roller Skiing Competition Kicks Off Next Biathlon Season

When next year's biathlon season begins, it will be on roller skis. The weekend of 18-19 October will transform the Olympic Park in Munich, southern Germany, into a biathlon festival culminating in a supersprint between the 60 best male and 60 best female skiers in the world.

For over ten years, a biathlon competition has been held every year at the German top team Schalke 04's football arena in front of a large audience. The event has been highly appreciated by both the audience and the active participants. Other locations have followed suit and moved biathlon to arenas, including Stockholm, where a competition will be held for the second time at Stockholm Stadium in early March.

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) now wants to create a festival in an urban environment in Munich where fans themselves can try out the sport. Rollskiing competitions in para-biathlon and youth competitions will also be organized.

The weekend concludes with the elite competition, which begins with four qualifying heats before the final.
