Tragically, she was suffocated by her own vomit on Guy Fawkes Night. Our veterinarians say that it was likely a reaction to the fireworks, says Ben Supple at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) to the newspaper The Scotsman.

On Guy Fawkes Day, which is celebrated in the UK and New Zealand on November 5, bonfires and fireworks are lit and crackers are fired.

The frightening noises seem to have been too much for her, says Supple.

RZSS is now calling for stricter legislation on fireworks and a ban on sales to the general public.

Roxie was born at the zoo in Edinburgh, Scotland on July 17. In the wild, red pandas, also known as lesser pandas, live in bamboo forests in southern Himalaya. The animals are highly endangered.
