Russia's President Vladimir Putin says that the country should start producing robots that were previously prohibited under a weapons agreement with the USA.

We need to start producing these attack systems and then, based on the real situation, make decisions on where – if it is necessary to ensure our security – we will place them, says the President.

He is referring to robots that were previously prohibited by the INF treaty.

The treaty, which was signed in 1987 between the then Soviet Union and the USA, aimed to abolish all medium-range robots with a range between 500 and 5,500 kilometers.

The USA withdrew from the treaty in 2019, citing that Russia had breached it. Russia denied the allegations.

Putin says that the USA has now started using such robots in exercises in Denmark.

We need to react to this and make decisions about what we will do in the future in this area.
